Court social workers equipped volunteers with knowledge and skills to alleviate challenges faced by defendants and their families. Trained volunteers are then deployed to various courts to deliver services for indicted persons who await court hearings, promote crime prevention and disseminate the message of care within the community. In 2017/2018, ten volunteer training activities were organised which included fundamental training of voluntary work, legal knowledge, workshop on the rule of law, recovery road of mental health, aromatherapy workshop, hiking, well-being enhancement programme, and Chinese New Year gathering. Also, an exchange tour was organized to learn more about social welfare services and volunteer services in Foshan, China. The training not only enhanced the mutual support among volunteers, but also let them share the accolades and the sincerity. Ms. Tsui Li Chun, Margaret, one of our renowned volunteers, was nominated for the Outstanding NGO Volunteer Award Programme organised by the Hong Kong Correctional Services Department. Project Hope – Support Service for Elderly Arrestees (Project Hope) In view of a rise of crime committed by elder people, we cooperated with the Hong Kong Police Force (New Territories South Regional) to launch Project Hope in 2016. Our social workers assisted elderly crime suspects aged 65 or above from the early stage of police investigation, under the Police Superintendent Discretionary Scheme, or being taken into prosecution process. The elderly suspects received our guidance in handling criminal proceedings, resolving welfare problems as well as strengthening support network throughout prosecution processes and post-sentencing stage. Free Legal Advice Scheme Due to the lack of resources, some defendants who will attend court hearings have to go through all legal procedures alone but without appropriate legal aid nor they have knowledge of legal principles and provisions. The Society therefore launched the Free Legal Advice Scheme, which voluntary lawyers were invited to provide them with legal advice, while our social workers assisted them to complete legal procedures. Nine defendants enjoyed this service in 2017/2018. Workshop on the Rule of Law and Court Visit Our team was frequently invited to organise workshops for community members on the rule of law and court visits. We treasured these opportunities to introduce the criminal proceedings and basic legal knowledge to the community and elevate the awareness of crime prevention and promoting the spirit of the rule of law. In 2017/2018, Eleven activities were organised and attracted participants who were ex-convicts and their families, social work students of City University of Hong Kong, social workers from Beijing as well as social worker students from different universities in Mainland China including China Youth Politics Institute, Shanghai University, Tianjin University of Technology, South China Normal University and Fuzhou University. | 32 |
