Mock Trial Justice Education Project

The Mock Trial Justice Education Project began in 2007 and has been held continuously for eighteen years, enjoying strong support from the academic community. The rule of law is a core value of Hong Kong, and young people are the future leaders of society. They need to understand social systems and recognise their civic responsibilities. Enhancing their knowledge and appreciation of concepts such as the rule of law, justice, and civic responsibility is therefore especially important for strengthening sound values.

Through mock trial competitions and various educational activities, the project enables young people to deepen their understanding of the legal system in an interactive and engaging way. Participants experience, learn, and reflect on civic responsibility and the spirit of the rule of law. In the mock trial competitions, participants take on different roles—including prosecution and defence lawyers, defendants, and witnesses—engaging in the entire legal process. They explore criminal behaviour and related social issues from multiple perspectives, further reflecting on the relationship between the rule of law, justice, individuals, and society.

Our Rationale

Mock Trial @ Positive Thinking

With the support of the Youth Development Bureau’s Positive Thinking Activities Funding Scheme, the two‑year “Mock Trial @ Positive Thinking” project has been launched.

The project continues to pivot on “mock trial” as the core tool, offering a diverse range of activities such as workshops, visits, and competitions to provide services for students, youth, and parents, thereby strengthening young people’s spirit of the rule of law. At the same time, the project incorporates elements of positive thinking. Based on the PERMA theory, activities bring young people positive emotions, life meaning, positive relationships, a sense of achievement, and engagement. This helps them build expectations for their lives, future, and daily experiences, learn to face stress positively, develop resilience in adversity, and reduce the risk of criminal behaviour.

The project also integrates the concept of positive youth development, recognising the key role of families in young people’s growth. It expands parent participation, promoting parent‑child interaction within the project so that young people receive more comprehensive support and encouragement from their families.

Our Goal

Law‑Abiding Awareness  Resilience in Adversity

  • With the assistance of legal professionals and support from the education sector, the project enables secondary and tertiary students to understand Hong Kong’s judicial system and the consequences of breaking the law through mock trial competitions and training, thereby strengthening their law‑abiding awareness and resilience.
  • It provides positive learning opportunities for students with weaker academic performance, those with special educational needs, at‑risk youth, or rehabilitated youth. Through experiential activities, interactive computer game seminars, training, and competitions, it enhances their self‑efficacy and confidence, while strengthening resilience.
  • The project expands its service scope by connecting schools with parents, offering guided visits and volunteer services to assist in competitions. This allows parents and children to experience the “mock trial” journey together, helping young people build sound values while promoting the importance of volunteer work.
  • It harnesses the power of youth, encouraging them to lead, plan, and promote civic education and community development projects, thereby fostering mutual trust with society.
