Mock Trial Justice Education Project

The Mock Trial Justice Education Project, which began in 2007, has successfully organized events for the past 16 years and has received positive feedback from the education community. We are pleased to announce that the project will continue with the support of the Funding Scheme for Youth Positive Thinking Activities from The Home and Youth Affairs Bureau. The upcoming two-year Mock Trial Justice Education Project 2023-2025, specifically designed for secondary school students, tertiary students, and young people in Hong Kong, will commence during the 2023-2024 school year.

The project will pivot on “Mock Court” as a tool to pair participating secondary and tertiary students up with their mentors comprising practising solicitors or barristers. During the training, young people will be able to gain a progressive understanding of the judicial system, respect for law and an agreeable attribute of positive thinking. The project will also recruit rehabilitated youth to participate in different aspects, enabling them to reflect on the experience of personal growth in retrospect and broaden the mind to the benefit of their rehabilitation process.

Our Rationale

“Rule of law” is one of the core values in Hong Kong. As the pillars of the future society, youngsters need to understand the social system and their civil responsibility. Therefore, enhancing their understanding and recognition of concepts such as rule of law, justice and civil responsibility is of paramount importance in order to develop positive values.

Through high interactive Mock Trial Competitions and educational programmes, the young generation can have a deeper understanding on justice and rule of law with an experiential learning model. During Mock Trial Competition, students experience the whole process of trial, roleplaying counsels for prosecution and defense, the accused and witnesses. With different perspectives, students can further explore and discuss on criminal behaviors and related social issues, as well as further reflect the relationship between oneself and the society.

With the support of the Funding Scheme for Youth Positive Thinking Activities under The Home and Youth Affairs Bureau, apart from the original core themes, the project has also incorporated the elements of team spirit and positive thinking to nurture good qualities of life for young people.
